Civil Engineering (CIV)

The need for professionals with a background of Civil engineering is always on the rise. Those with problem solving skills are the ones in demand. Professionals with these skills are sure to land up with successful career in the years to come. The department of Civil Engineering of the SaIT is providing the opportunity for the students to develop a firm foundation in Science and Technology. I believe that the opportunities for the students in the campus should lead to an appreciation of the holistic development of an individual. And finally, the objective is to encourage our students for having passion towards the course and desire to continue to learn.

TEACHING - LEARNING PROCESS

The teaching-learning process is defined as a systematic, sequential, planned course of action on the part of both the teacher and learner (student) to achieve the outcomes of teaching and learning. The university provides the course outcomes along with the syllabus and the department abides by delivering the same to the students mentioned by the university. This process makes the students understand the subject better and also helps the students to be moulded as per the industry requirements.

We at Civil Engineering Department follow the process which includes power point presentations, experiential learning. This also inculcates professional responsibilities in a learner. Teachers encourage the students to understand the topics deeply by giving necessary direction to the students. Learners will be asked to explore the topics and will be made to present in the class which helps them to indulge in learning process. Regular assessments will be conducted to check how much students have learnt. Hands on session in using latest software will be provided.

Faculties should be updated as per the latest syllabus for which they will be attending various Faculty Development Programmes, Conferences, Workshops and Seminars. Department invites various academicians and industry people to disseminate widely which benefits both students as well as teachers.

Departmental Infrastructure

The infrastructure available in the department facilitates students to develop their skill and knowledge within the framework of curriculum prescribed by the Visvesvaraya Technological University.

LABORATORIES

The department has the following well-equipped laboratories / workshop:

  • Surveying Practice – I
  • Basic materials Testing Lab
  • Surveying Practice – II
  • Engineering Geology lab
  • Hydraulics & Hydraulic machinery Lab
  • Geo-technical Engineering lab
  • Environmental Engineering lab

GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING LAB:

In recent times, Geology is commercially important for mineral,  hydrocarbon exploration, for evaluating water resources and is publicly important for the prediction and understanding of natural hazardous, the remediation of environmental problems, for providing insight into past climate change; place a role in geotechnical engineering and is a major academic discipline. Our Engineering Geology lab is having sufficient samples of rocks and minerals. We have procured raw field samples of rocks, minerals, polished samples, maps, hardness testing kits, brunton compass and teakwood models. All this have been neatly displayed and sufficient care has been taken to preserve them.

SURVEYING PRACTICE LAB:

Surveying is the science and art of making all essential measurements to determine the relative position of points or physical and cultural details above, on, or beneath the surface of the earth, and to depict them in a usable form, or to establish the position of points or details. Ours surveying practice lab is well equipped (Theodolite, Dumpy level, Auto level, Chain, Prismatic and surveyor’s compass, Ceylon ghat tracer, Box sextant, Hand level, Substance bar, Steel band and plain table with accessories, levelling staff, Optical square, Pantograph, Plan meter and total station).

HYDRAULICS & HYDRAULIC MACHINERY LAB:

The definition of Hydraulics; is a topic of science and engineering dealing with the mechanical properties of liquids. Hydraulics is part of the more general discipline of fluid power. Fluid mechanics provides the theoretical foundation for hydraulics, which focuses on the engineering uses of fluid properties. Hydraulic topics range through most science and engineering disciplines, and cover concepts such as pipe flow, fluid control circuitry, pumps, turbines, hydropower, computational fluid dynamics, flow measurement, and also in relation to water hydraulics, dam design, river channel behavior and erosion. Hydraulics in the field of Agricultural Machinery and Construction plant involve the use of Oil as the Fluid medium.

Basic materials Testing Lab:

Basic material testing laboratory introduces to the students, the testing procedure of materials used in the civil engineering discipline like – cement, aggregate, concrete, steel timber, bricks and tiles. The need for compliance with current standards and specifications for materials is also stressed in the course le etc. The equipments are used to understand the practical behavior of the materials evaluating the physical properties, mechanical properties; suitability of material for use in construction, material selection code provisions, etc, this knowledge is of paramount importance in order to establish the relationship between material properties and the overall behavior of a structure.

CAD Lab:

Programming of Elementary Structural Design by using C language, Drawing of Building Plans and Building elements by using Auto CADD. In this lab drawing of plans, sections and elevations can be done by using different tools like drawing tools, modifying tools etc. in order to increase the thinking and creating capacity of the students. By using this software one can easily understand the situations in the field. By this they can easily understand the details and detailing of the structures, estimation of the building. Other software’s like STAAD Pro (Structural analysis and design) and Microsoft excel to enhance the knowledge in analysis and design of the different type of structural elements.

Environmental Engineering lab:

Investigation of Quality of Water – Determination of pH, Acidity, Alkalinity, Solids, Chlorides, Hardness, Chlorine demand and Turbidity of Water. Investigation of Quality of Sewage Water like BOD, COD. In this laboratory the chemical physical and parameter analysis can be done through the different mechanism. By doing this we can study the properties and qualities of drinking water standards and to find the permissible limits. To analyse the water treatment and to have correct solution or remedy to minimize the contamination present in the water.

The department library has over 100 books and copies of student project reports. It is planned to have journals, compact disks containing academic and other relevant technical information for being used by staff and students. A computer is placed in the library to enable the students and staff to study the material on CDs. Internet connection is also provided. It has an overhead projector, computer and LCD projector. Students and invited speakers, use the facility for delivering seminar lecturers/talks. It is also being used for engaging elective and tutorial classes. The CAD laboratory is equipped with state-of-art computers and the necessary software for undergraduate teaching. The computers are networked. Students have unlimited access to the laboratory and for browsing the net.

A departmental computer centre with sufficient number of computer systems and Internet connections exis

About department

Department of Civil Engineering of SaIT has been imparting quality education to meet the technological advancement and industrial requirements. This has been made possible due to qualified and dedicated faculty, state of the art laboratories and infrastructure facilities.

Civil Engineering is the mother of all engineering disciplines. It deals with the design, construction and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment, including works such as bridges, roads, canals, dams, airports, highways, buildings, flyovers, tunnels and offshore structures. The study involves planning, designing and executing structural works.

SYLLABUS

FACILITIES

The major specializations within civil engineering are structural, water resources, environmental, construction, transportation, geo-technical engineering etc. Most engineering graduates start with the basics and as they prove their competence they are given more and more responsible tasks. Senior engineers involve in more complex design works or management of junior engineers or into specialized consulting.
