Facilities |
|
Departmental
Infrastructure
The department has required basic facilities such as workshop, machine shop, Energy conversion Lab, Fluid Mechanics lab, Design and Computer based Mechanical oriented software lab, material testing / metrology and foundry labs. The up-gradation of the laboratory for higher studies and research is under progress.
Further, facilities for Metallurgical studies, Wear and Corroison test facilities are being set up to facilitate the departmental research scholars to carry out their research activities as part of Research and Development activities of the department. The possibility of taking up ‘external consultancy’ is also thought off.
The
Department of Mechanical Engineering at SaIT is well
equipped with various laboratories and workshops totaling
13 in number including four laboratories based on computer
systems. All the equipment in the laboratories are
up-to-date and the laboratories are designed not only to
cater to the requirements of curriculum coverage, but also
to assist in the final semester project work by the
students. A brief description of the thirteen laboratories
is given below: |

hacksaw frames, chisels, punches, scribers, etc
Students work in an airy atmosphere under safe
conditions. |

Equipped with 70 state-of-art computers, This
laboratory caters to the first year students of all
departments. Students learn engineering drawing in the
first angle projection using Solid Edge Software. Each
student has one computer for himself / herself and
after instructions given using an LCD projector,
proceeds to understand the intricacies of drawing and
carries out the exercises, availing of assistance from
faculty / instructor as needed |

|
|
Machine Shop |
|
|
Another Second year mechanical engineering laboratory
is intended to teach the students as to the working of
various metal processing machines and on-hand usage of
these machines. It is equipped with lathes – both belt
driven and gear driven, shaping machines, milling
machines, radial and simple drilling machines,
grinders, sheet bending machines, etc.
The machine shop is also useful for
fabrication-related final year projects. |
|
|
Computer-aided Machine
Drawing Laboratory |
Machine drawing is taught to the mechanical
engineering students in the second year. Software like
AUTOCAD, Solid Edge, etc. are used in this laboratory
and individual student is instructed and prepared for
making, reading and correcting machine parts and
assembly drawings. |
|
|
|
|
Fluid Mechanics &
Machinery Laboratory |
|
|
How fluids flow, how much power is required for
transfer of fluids from one place to another and what
are the friction and other losses while transfer as
well as the fluid-based machines are important for
everyman.
The Fluid Mechanical and Machinery laboratory (third
year mechanical engineering) has various equipment for
the student to experiment, learn and equip himself /
herself with the basics and some advanced concepts:
- Apparatus for determination of friction in
pipes
- Apparatus for determination of minor losses
through pipes
- Determination of force developed by impact of
jets on vanes
- Calibration of Orifice Meter, Nozzles,
