The Department of Mechanical Engineering started in the year 2001 with an intake of 60. It offers a richly integrated curriculum of education and research to its students. The Department now offers Bachelor degree in Engineering (BE) with an intake of 60 students and the current intake is increased to 180 students
Courses Offered :
B E (Mech. Engg.) - four year U G program approved by A I C T E, and recognized by Visvesvaraya Technological University (V T U), Belgaum..
M Tech. (Prodn. Engg.) - two year P G program. The course offers an ‘in depth’ exposure to students on Production, planning, quality evaluation etc. this in addition to the ‘internship’ in industries to render‘on site’ knowledge to the students on current industrial / technological status.
Research & Development:
A very encouraging ‘Research ambience is prevailing in the department. Some of the areas where the research work is under progress are:
- Metal Foam processing, Kinetic Spraying, Ultrafine grain through Severe Plastic Deformation, Material with Graphene, Molding using ‘magnetic particles’
- Tribology, Residual stress measurements, Failure Analysis, Life assessment of Power plant components, Computational Modeling and Analysis,
- Polymeric materials processing and characterization. Failure Analysis Investigation, Computational Modeling Analysis, F E M Analysis,
The department is an approved Research & Development Center approved by V T U to carry out research work leading to Ph D degree.
Faculty members have doctoral degree and carrying out research work in some of the areas mentioned above. Besides this, there are fifteen faculty members who are half way through their research work for Ph D. This faculty involves the students in their research work, which enrich the students with adequate advanced technology.
The students will also be involved in research activities. They will be made to participate in R & D work by faculty members by giving some part of the research work, in design and developing basic research facilities and prototypes. Many of the students have been involved in R & D activities like processing of Metal Sponge, Surface modification by kinetic coating, cryogenic treatment, Alternative fuels, Bio gas fuel etc. This involvement makes the students to update themselves with ongoing advancement in the Mechanical engineering.
As a part of R&D facility the departmental has been granted with a proposal of Rs 40 Lakh to set up a Novel Technique of Kinetic Spray, which has huge industrial applications with new surface modification technique. The facility that is to be set up under will enable good “metallurgical studies of material”.
